As the Trump Administration continues to slash federal funding, the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity’s Fair Housing Project has also taken a hit.
CVOEO says an annual grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development typically funds 80% of their fair housing work. Still, the department recently ended its financial support of efforts to fight housing discrimination and enforce fair housing laws.
The Fair Housing Project is Vermont’s only statewide program dedicated to combating housing discrimination. Now, CVOEO is facing a $30,000 shortfall.
“What we’ll lose is the staff capacity to help people one-on-one, work their way through the system, so that their rights can be defended. What we’ll also lose is the community-based outreach that we do,” said CVOEO’s Associate Director for Housing Advocacy Programs Jess Hyman.
