Burlington will open an emergency shelter this President's Day weekend as a widespread winter storm looks to bring dangerously cold conditions to the area.
The emergency shelter will be at the Miller Center at 130 Gosse Court and will be open from Monday evening at 5 p.m. to Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Evening temperatures on Monday are forecast to be below zero including windchill.
There are currently more than 250 people sleeping on the streets of Burlington, according to the city, and the shelter is being opened to accommodate those people and prevent any unnecessary loss of life.
The shelter is being operated in partnership with the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO).
No pre-registration is required, but the shelter will be restricted to adults 18 years of age or older. Pets will be allowed as well.
Transportation will be provided from the Community Resource Center on North Winooski Avenue and the Fletcher Free Library on Monday evening.
