27+ Years as a Voice Against Violence
After 27 years at Voices Against Violence, Kris Lukens is retiring. Shannon McMahon, dedicated team member for the past 6 years, will be the next Director.
We invite all to make a gift to Voices Against Violence in honor of Kris’ legacy and Shannon’s future leadership.
Domestic and sexual violence are present in our community, and CVOEO is here to help.
Our Voices Against Violence program works towards the elimination of domestic and sexual violence and stalking through direct service, education, and systems change. Since its founding in 1980, Voices Against Violence has purchased a shelter, expanded its work with children, and deepened ties within the community. Unfortunately, domestic and sexual violence persist in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties.
Last year, Voices helped survivors seek immediate safety and support, and pursued longer-term efforts focused on prevention, transformative justice, racial equity, and community change. Central to this work is the Laurie’s House emergency shelter, a critical community asset that provides safety, hope, and healing for our neighbors in need.
In 2023, Voices Against Violence/Laurie's House staff:
- served 426 victims/survivors and 46 children
- offered 5,871 nights of shelter for 92 individual adults and children
- served 6 adults and 4 children with transitional housing
- responded to 2056 total hotline calls, chats, and email

You are a big part of ending violence -- when you advocate, volunteer, and donate you are taking a stand. At Voices Against Violence, we use a survivor-centered approach; this means we support survivors to make the decisions they feel are best. We believe that everyone has strengths that can help them achieve their own goals around relationships, sexuality, and safety.
We also meet survivors “where they’re at”, supporting them in their current situation and desires, and never judging based on the past.
Community support is the backbone of our survivor centered services:
- 24-hour Crisis Hotline and Online Chatline
- Emergency and transitional housing
- Legal advocacy
- All About Kids, supervised visitation
- Community outreach and education
- Support groups
- Healing and transformation
