ABOUT KARIBU

Karibu (Welcome in Swahili) is a fashion show featuring New American models, African drumming and dance on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Models from countries across the world will be wearing traditional dress and “takes” on tradition designed and sewn by artisans from their own community. This year’s show will feature intergenerational families—grandmothers, sons and grand-daughters alike will walk in-sync, presenting the breathtaking evolution of fashion in their cultures.

The event will be held at Main Street Landing in Burlington, and we expect a crowd of approximately 300. Regular ticket price will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door, and there will be a cash bar. Special limited Red Carpet tickets will be $50 and will give you access to a red carpet pre-show complete with a rich selection of traditional foods from New American community members.

The evening will open with call and response African drumming group Africa Jamono, and dancers will move throughout the crowd, and then the fashion show will begin. CVOEO’s Travis Poulin and Sandrine Kibuey (U.S. citizen whose country of origin is the Democratic Republic of the Congo) will co-host the event. This duo will bring comedy, knowledge of the New American community and their passion for supporting our new neighbors to the stage. At the finish of the fashion show Africa Jamono will reappear.

Word will be spread far and wide via print, radio, and television press, social media including a Facebook page for the event, and CVOEO Websites. A professional photographer will document the event and photos and videos will go out during the event via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

WHO WE ARE:

In 2017, we served more than 2,220 New Americans. The most recent refugee arrivals are from Bhutan and Burma. With each new population comes a unique set of needs, but common across all cultures is the need for the basics to survive in their new home. This is where our crisis programs come in to great demand, providing housing, heating fuel and food assistance. As people become acclimated and settled, however, they also need the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive: employment, financial literacy, tenant rights and responsibilities, and tax preparation, to name a few of the program areas in which CVOEO provides further support.
