Crisis Fuel

There is an application process that takes several eligibility factors into account, including income, resources and need (the date of the pending disconnection notice or the amount of fuel remaining in your tank).

Crisis Fuel Assistance is an emergency-based program. You can only apply when you have a valid disconnection notice for a metered fuel source, such as electricity, VT gas, and more rarely, metered propane, or when you are within two weeks of running out of bulk home heating fuel.

The Crisis Fuel program does not pay for special trip charges, so if you use bulk heating fuel (oil, kerosene, propane, etc.), check your tank on a regular basis. Do not run out of fuel as it can often take several days for a fuel company to deliver to any specific customer and you do not want to run out of fuel in the meantime.

Crisis Fuel funding is generally available between the last Monday of November and the middle of April. Assistance is only available a limited number of times per year.

An additional component of the Crisis Fuel program is an Emergency Heating System Repair Program. If you are a homeowner with a broken or red-tagged furnace or bulk fuel tank, you may apply for assistance to repair or replace the heating system. You will need to provide income documentation and proof of home ownership, such as a property tax bill.
